Angel the O’Bar Leprechaun will be the parade grand marshal March 17 and in charge of tomfoolery.

Sean and Laurie Death, owners of the Ocracoke Bar & Grille, think it’s time Ocracoke had its own St. Patrick’s Day Parade and have organized one for March 17.

“All throughout the country there are St. Patrick’s Day parades,” Sean said recently. “Here’s an excuse for us to have one.”

Ocracoke has British Isles heritage.
“We have lots of O’Neals here,” Sean said.

The “O’Bar,” as his establishment along Irvin Garrish Highway has been dubbed, should fit right in.

The couple dove into this idea and have hired “Angel the Leprechaun,” a “little person” whose height reaches four feet, to be the grand marshal and parade judge.

The parade will begin at 1 p.m. at the Ocracoke gas station and end at the O’Bar.

There will be a single $550 cash prize for the best float, group or whimsical idea participating in the parade.

Among the parade rules available at the gas station, participants should be respectful and tasteful.

While the registration deadline is March 15, Death said last-minute entrants can bring their signed forms the day of the parade.

After the winner is announced, Angel will be on hand at the O’Bar until 5 p.m. to sign autographs, take photos and be in charge of tomfoolery.

Death hopes the day will evolve into a pub crawl to other establishments on the island.
