A Carteret County woman is in custody following a high-speed chase on Ocracoke Island Saturday afternoon.
Tara E. Cranmer, 34, of Gloucester, was held in lieu of $22,000 bond for two felony and three misdemeanor offenses, said Capt. Jason Daniels of the Hyde County Sheriff’s Department.
Daniels said a call came in Saturday afternoon around 3 p.m. of a person driving recklessly in the village.
When deputies caught up with Cranmer on Highway 12 at the National Park Service campground area, blue lights and sirens were activated after the sheriff’s department determined the vehicle was stolen out of New Jersey, and Cranmer fled at a high rate of speed.
She stopped in the parking lot at the north end ferry dock.
Cranmer fled her vehicle, and in a joint effort by the deputies and Park Service law enforcement officers, she was apprehended about an hour later.
“No one was injured,” Daniels said. “The Park Service rangers were essential in helping us apprehend the suspect.”
After processing Cranmer, deputies transported her off the island to a detention facility in Manteo, Dare County.
Cranmer was charged with “Flee to elude arrest in a motor vehicle” and possession of a stolen vehicle, both felonies, as well as “resisting, delay and obstructing a law enforcement officer,” careless and reckless driving and DWI, all misdemeanors.
Thank goodness it wasn’t summer when people are hiking, walking, biking, driving golf carts, etc all over the island.
Luckily none of the local children, or any islanders or vacationers were hurt.
What a beanhead! Hope they throw the book at her….or at least a map…lol
