As all eyes are turned to the tragic events occurring in Texas due to Hurricane Harvey, the National Weather Service has provided a warning about a fast-moving storm that could impact Ocracoke early in the week.
Bob Frederick, meteorologist with the National Weather Service based in Newport, has issued the following warning:
We are continuing to monitor low pressure near Florida that is expected to lift northeast to near or just off the Carolina coast late Monday into Tuesday.
There is potential for this system to become tropical or sub tropical.
The Hurricane Center may fly a plane out to investigate the area of low pressure later today. Regardless if its tropical or non tropical we expect gusty winds and rough seas along the coast with enhanced rip currents.
Locally heavy rain of two to three inches is also expected, especially closer to the coast.
Please continue to monitor forecasts and if significant impacts are expected we will begin more detailed power-points.
