The Salvation Army of Washington will expand its social services once a week in Hyde, Tyrrell and Washington counties.
Beginning Thursday, Oct. 25, the Army will be at the Plymouth Church of The Nazarene from 9 a.m. to noon every Thursday for residents of these counties to apply for rent, utility and food assistance. Clients will be seen as scheduled by appointment by calling 252-946-2523.
The expansion of services follows the Salvation Army leadership’s decisions to better serve Beaufort, Bertie, Hyde, Martin, Tyrrell and Washington counties, which has been its purview since 1939. The Army found a partner in the Plymouth Church of The Nazarene.
“Many clients have told us that they have transportation issues,” said Lt. Karl Bush, corps officer. “When a client needs rent or utility assistance due to lack of funding, it is very difficult to ask them to travel to Washington, especially as some areas are more than an hour away.”
In 2017, the Salvation Army served 409 individuals in Hyde County, 149 in Tyrrell County and 365 in Washington County with rent, utility and food assistance.
