Permits are available until 1 p.m. today (April 29); from 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday May 1; and from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday, May 3, in the Ocracoke Community Center.
These re-entry permits for island residents and property owners are used when emergency conditions, such as after hurricane evacuations, limit general access to island.
If you renewed your permit since 2018, it is valid through 2023.
Those with existing permits expired prior to 2018 only need to apply for a new 2018-2023 expiration date sticker for their permit.
You will need to bring your hand tag so the data base can be updated. Those applying for the first time will need to complete the full application and supply all necessary documents.
Residents also may renew existing permits or apply for a new permit in person or by mail. If renewing in person, be sure to bring the plastic hang tag with you.
If renewing by mail, the applications are processed quarterly. Permits can also be obtained on the mainland in the Hyde County Emergency Services Department public safety building, 1223 Main St., Swan Quarter. during normal business hours.
No re-entry permit applications are accepted during an active storm.
The re-entry permit application, answers to frequently-asked-questions and the Re-Entry Permit Application are available on the Hyde County website www.hydecountync.gov and will be posted at the Ocracoke Post Office.
