Ocracoke visitors who purchase lodging of any kind pay an additional 5 percent on top of sales tax. Those revenues are divided between the TDA, which manages 2 percent of that total, and the Ocracoke Occupancy Tax, for which a volunteer board recommends expenditures from 3 percent of that total.  Hyde County takes 10 percent of the 3 percent collected, and 3 percent of the 2 percent collected to administer the funds.

The TDA, established in 2017, is an autonomous body who, by law, must spend two thirds of their revenues on tourism promotion. The Occupancy Tax board recommends disbursements to nonprofit groups for “any legal purpose,” and its recommendations have to be approved by the Hyde County Commissioners.
