Artist Sarah Searight brings her free-flowing painting style to the island as Down Creek Gallery continues its summer art series, “Expose Yourself To Art,” from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday (July 17).

A part-time island resident since 1999, Searight paints plein air, or, out in the open.

Searight spends the other part of her year in Port Aransas and Austin, Texas.

Her work is inspired by coastal living.

“Being able to live on the beach allows me to witness the constant subtle changes in the colors of the dunes, marshes, and ocean as well as swimming and surfing during my time off,” she said.

Her sought-after scenes of the sea, beaches and local surroundings are in galleries in Texas, Florida and the Outer Banks and in numerous private collections.

Searight graduated from Southern Methodist University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in printmaking, drawing and painting.

She studied watercolor painting under Michael Frary at the University of Texas in 1981, later extending her knowledge of movement and figure drawing at The University of New Hampshire attending a formal muscle and bone structure series of classes in 1986.

Light refreshments will be served at the gallery, located at 260 Irvin Garrish Hwy.
