Beginning Tuesday, March 31, the N.C. Department of Transportation’s Ferry System will adopt a new set of schedules to respond to Gov. Roy Cooper’s statewide stay-at-home order.
Cooper ordered people in North Carolina to stay at home from 5 p.m. Monday, March 31, until April 29 to help stop the spread of the COVID-19 novel coronavirus.
The ferry schedules are being adjusted due to lower demand for travel while the stay at home order is in place.
For Ocracoke-bound ferries, visitors will not be allowed due to an emergency declaration issued Wednesday by Hyde County. Only Ocracoke residents and those with permits issued by Hyde County will be allowed access to Ocracoke-bound ferries.
The new ferry schedules to and from Ocracoke, effective March 31, are as follows:
Hatteras-Ocracoke
From Hatteras: 6 a.m., 9 a.m., noon, 3 p.m., 6 p.m., 9 p.m. and midnight
From Ocracoke: 4:30 a.m., 7:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.
Cedar Island-Ocracoke
From Cedar Island: 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
From Ocracoke: 7:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Swan Quarter-Ocracoke
From Swan Quarter: 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
From Ocracoke: 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

I would not wish this situation on anyone, but the lock-down of the ferry system at least will help to protect the community. I live and work in Fredericksburg, Va. and the number of out-of-state license plates coming down I-95 from NJ, NY and points north is frightening. There is no way to control folks that are “fleeing” the pandemic, though the Hatteras Inlet might work!
