A Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage online program, “Islands on the Edge: North Carolina’s Maritime Culture in the Time of the Pandemic,” at noon on Thursday will feature Ocracoke.
Among those moderator Betty Belanus, curator and education specialist with the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, will talk to is Alton Ballance, owner of the Crews Inn, retired educator and fellow of NCCAT on Ocracoke and author of the book Ocracokers.
Karen Amspacher, director of the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum on Harkers Island, and Ernie Foster, a Hatteras charter boat captain and local historian, also will talk about their communities and experiences having lived through many hurricanes, tidal surges, other weather crises, and now the COVID-19 pandemic.
