Movies to honor America 250th anniversary

The documentary “Democracy Under Siege” will start a series of movies shown in the Deepwater Theater in honor of America’s 250th anniversary. Films begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 8.

Ocracoke Alive will honor America’s 250th by showing three films in July dealing with American history.

All films are free and will be shown at 7 p.m. in the Deepwater Theater on School Road.

The first film at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, will be the documentary “Democracy Under Siege,” written and directed by Oscar-nominated director Laura Nix.

Punctuated by the political commentary of Pulitzer-prize winning editorial cartoonist Ann Telnaes (formerly of The Washington Post), top political analysts reveal the complex history and challenges of the United States, on the eve of the 2024 election.

As the promise of American multiracial democracy faces a renewed backlash, can the nation preserve its democratic ideal, or will it fall prey to an authoritarian takeover?

The 55-minute film features history professor Heather Cox Richardson, Rep. Jamie Raskin, Steven Levitsky, Melissa Murray and Elie Mystal.

The film version of the Broadway musical comedy “1776” will be shown on Tuesday, July 14.

In the days leading up to July 4, 1776, Continental Congressmen John Adams and Benjamin Franklin coerce Thomas Jefferson into writing the Declaration of Independence as a delaying tactic as they try to persuade the American colonies to support a resolution on independence.

As George Washington sends depressing messages describing one military disaster after another, the businessmen, landowners and slave holders in Congress all stand in the way of the Declaration, and a single “nay” vote will forever end the question of independence. Large portions of spoken and sung dialog are taken directly from the letters and memoirs of the actual participants.

The series will conclude with “Hamilton” on Wednesday, July 22.

“Hamilton” is the story of America then, told by America now, written by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Featuring a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, R&B, and show tunes, “Hamilton” has taken the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton and created a revolutionary moment in theater–a musical that has had a profound impact on culture, politics, and education.

Captured live at the Richard Rodgers Theater on Broadway in June 2016, the film transports its audience into the world of the Broadway show in a uniquely intimate way.
