Vehicle ferries on this route are free and board first-come; first-served.

This year, a labor shortage at Hatteras and severe shoaling issues in Pamlico Sound have forced the North Carolina Ferry System to sometimes cancel runs to Ocracoke Island.


Nov. 1 to Dec. 31:

From Hatteras: 5 a.m., 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, noon, 1 p.m., 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7:30, 9, 10 and midnight.

From Ocracoke: 4:30 a.m., 6:30, 7:30, 8:30, 9:30, 10:30, 11:30, 12:30 p.m., 1:30, 2:30, 3:30, 4:30, 5:30, 6:15, 7:30, 8:45, 10:30 and midnight.

As of Nov. 21, due to critical shoaling issues in the ferry channel just outside of Ocracoke’s Silver Lake Harbor, the schedule is as follows:

  • Ocracoke to Cedar Island:  7:30 a.m., 1 p.m.
  • Cedar Island to Ocracoke: 10:30 a.m., 4:30 p.m.
  • Ocracoke to Swan Quarter: 7 a.m., 1:30 p.m.
  • Swan Quarter to Ocracoke: 10 a.m., 4:30 p.m.

Two routes – Hatteras-Ocracoke and Ocracoke-Cedar Island – are officially part of the Outer Banks National Scenic Byway.
