The Cedar Island ferry is on the winter schedule while one of the ferry boats, the Sea Level, is out of commission awaiting a part.

That schedule is as follows:

Cedar Island to Ocracoke: 7 a.m., 10 a.m., 4 p.m., and 6:30 p.m.
Ocracoke to Cedar Island: 7:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m., and 9 p.m.
Swan Quarter to Ocracoke: 10 a.m., 1 p.m., 4:30 p.m.
Ocracoke to Swan Quarter: 7 a.m., 9:30 a.m., and 12:45 p.m.
Each leg is missing one run a day, said Tim Hass, Ferry Division spokesman, who explained that a bow thruster on this boat failed and the division is waiting for a new one to be shipped from Houston, Texas, on Monday.

“If all goes as planned, that would put the Sea Level back in service late next week,” he said.

Hass explained that when four boats are in operation, the summer schedule applies, and when only three boats are available, the winter schedule goes into effect.

The bow thruster is part of the propulsion/steering mechanics.

The Cedar Island and Swan Quarter ferries leave from the south end of the island. Both charge a fee for all vehicles and walk-ons. Both crossing times are more than two hours.

As for the runs on the free ferry between Hatteras and Ocracoke at the north end of the island, Hass said they have been on schedule.

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday continue to be heavy volume days, and he recommended that day visitors to the island will have less of a wait if they arrive at the Hatteras terminal before 10 a.m. or after 2 p.m.
