NC12 at the north end of Ocracoke Island on Monday was overwashed by high tides and a powerful storm system will continue to bring rainfall across the area through Monday night, with strong winds arriving early Tuesday morning and continuing through Tuesday afternoon.

The National Weather Service in Morehead City said Monday that expected threats and impacts include minor to moderate coastal flooding and widespread strong winds.

A Wind Advisory was issued for all of eastern North Carolina as well as a High Surf Advisory for beaches from Beaufort Inlet to Cape Hatteras.

Heavy fog shut down Hatteras Ferry operations around 8:30 Monday night.

Given anticipated weather conditions over the next several days, road closures are possible, said the NCDOT and urged extreme caution.

High tide on Tuesday, Feb. 13, will be at 9:56 a.m. and 10:28 p.m.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore recommends avoiding the north end of Ocracoke Island from one to two hours before high tide through one to two hours after high tide, due to high water levels and persistent ocean overwash.

Ocean overwash has been reported on the north end of Ocracoke during most high tide cycles over the past few days, ever since a coastal storm impacted the Outer Banks area last week.
