Hyde County’s America 250th committee has released its first project, “Our Heritage & History” booklet.

Designed to be used by visitors as well as history aficionados, the publication also has a resource list for readers seeking further information about Hyde County.

A section on Ocracoke history was written by Philip Howard.

Free print copies are available at the Hyde County Government Center, 30 Oyster Creek Rd., Swan Quarter, and also at both North Carolina Ferry terminals in Swan Quarter and Ocracoke.

The booklet may be viewed online at the county’s direct link at hydecountync.gov/boards_and_committees/america_250.php.

The full-color, comprehensive, 40-page publication was developed with a grant the committee received following its sanction last year by the Hyde County Board of Commissioners.

The U. S. Semi-quincentennial Commission is a nonpartisan organization established by Congress in 2016 to plan the celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026.

According to their website, america250.org, “The journey toward this historic milestone is an opportunity to pause and reflect on our nation’s past, honor the contributions of all Americans, and look ahead toward the future we want to create for the next generation and beyond.”

All states will participate in some manner.

In North Carolina, the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources is heading up the initiative. They are engaging with other state agencies, organizations, and individuals statewide with the goal of “energizing robust, comprehensive, and inclusive programs” across the state.

Hyde’s committee is chaired by mainlander Linda Gray Mayo.

Other members of the committee, with diverse perspectives and skills, have been meeting to share ideas about activities that will highlight the county’s role in “the making of America.”
