“Feathered Friends” a 6 X 8” oil painting by Barbara Bear Jamison.

This week, a group of visiting artists will capture scenes of Ocracoke’s natural beauty in paintings created while physically immersed in that beauty.

They will be on the island from Oct. 5 through Oct. 10 and will show and sell their work from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, at their rental house at 187 Silver Lake Dr.

This technique, called “en plein air,” is a French term that translates to “in the open air,” or painting outdoors rather than indoors or from photographs.

The artists travel to Ocracoke every October for a retreat to explore, paint, and enjoy camaraderie, friendships and talents.

The eight artists visiting this year are Sue Bark, Barbara Bear Jamison, Stephanie Biggers, Chris Bloom, Karen Lee Crenshaw, Diane Giannola, John Tabler, and Tina Williamson.

The artists will donate a portion of their sales revenues to an Ocracoke nonprofit.
