The National Weather Forecast Office in Newport/Morehead City issued a heads-up Monday afternoon (Oct. 6) regarding upcoming unsettled weather.
A cold front is forecast to cross the Carolinas on Wednesday, ushering in strong and persistent northeasterly winds from Thursday extending into the weekend. Rain is expected on Saturday and Sunday.
This, combined with king tides expected tomorrow through Saturday, poses a threat of elevated seas and flooding for coastal portions of North Carolina.
The development of a coastal low this weekend along the front is possible. If it does form, even stronger winds and long-period swell may impact the coast.
Details on this will come into focus in the coming days. The next briefing will be on Tuesday afternoon.
Forecasters are also monitoring a disturbance in the central Atlantic for potential development into Tropical Storm Jerry by mid-week, with a possible path near the Leeward Islands. Some predications are that it will curl north into the open Atlantic this weekend.
