The Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 (the “DMCA”) provides a process for copyright owners who believe that material posted on the internet infringes their rights under U.S. copyright law.

A copyright-infringement notice generally must include:
- Identification of the copyrighted work — Sufficient information to identify the copyrighted work or works that you believe have been infringed.
- Identification of the allegedly infringing material — Sufficient information to identify the material claimed to be infringing and its location on the Ocracoke Observer website so that we can locate it.
- Good-faith statement — A statement that the copyright owner or authorized representative has a good-faith belief that the use of the material is not authorized by the copyright owner, the owner’s agent, or the law.
- Contact information — The complaining party’s name and contact information, including mailing address, telephone number and, if available, email address.
- Statement of accuracy and authority — A statement that the information provided in the notice is accurate and, under penalty of perjury, that the complaining party is authorized to act on behalf of the copyright owner.
- Signature — The physical or electronic signature of the copyright owner or the owner’s authorized representative.
