Greg Honeycutt, board president, announced at the radio’s recent annual meeting that he is finalizing an agreement with Hyde County School District to move the studio from a kiosk on Silver Lake Harbor to the second floor of the former Ocracoke Volunteer Fire Department building. The new location on Back Road is part of the Ocracoke School campus.

Benefits of the move include doubling the station’s current space, making it less vulnerable to damage from a hurricane and proximity to its broadcasting antenna.

“It’s on the school campus and we hope to get the school kids involved in the radio station,” said Tommy Hutcherson, who chairs the building committee.

The projected expenses for the move, which includes extensive renovations and handicap access to the second floor, are approximately $100,000. The money is expected to come from grants, the Occupancy Tax Board and through several fundraisers including the April 25 10k/5k and One-Mile Family Fun Run and the Women’s Arm Wrestling Tournament scheduled for June 18.

Since last fall, several new programs were added to the station’s schedule and evening prime-time hours are now filled with a variety of shows.
