Open enrollment for Medicare is coming up Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, and counseling to determine eligibility or review of Prescription Drug Plan (Part D) is available locally in Kill Devil Hills, Buxton and Manteo.
Persons turning 65 with limited income and assets may apply to determine if they for the program’s “Extra Help” with prescription drug plans, which may save recipients money on Medicare prescription drug plan premiums, deductibles and co-payments. 
SHIIP is a volunteer, consumer information division of the North Carolina Department of Insurance that assists people with Medicare, Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Plans), Medicare supplements, and long-term care insurance questions.  SHIIP also helps citizens recognize and prevent Medicare billing errors and possible fraud and abuse through our NC Senior Medicare Patrol (NCSMP) Program.
For Hyde County (including Ocracoke), beneficiaries can find help at Ocracoke Health Center. Alfredo Contreras is currently the SHIIP counselor for Ocracoke and can assist Medicare beneficiaries. To make an appointment please contact the clinic at (252)928-1511 or (252)921-0324.
