William “Billy” Potter Garrish, Jr., 74, of Ocracoke, died on April 6 in Peak Resources – Outer Banks, Nags Head.

He was the husband of Agnes Marie Garrish of Ocracoke.

Born Nov. 27, 1942, he was a son of the late Doris Lee Howard Garrish and William P. Garrish, Sr.

After graduating from Ocracoke School, Garrish enlisted with the United States Coast Guard serving his country honorably in Viet Nam before retiring. He would later retire from his second career with the National Park Service.

Billy was a member of Ocracoke United Methodist Church, Ocracoke Lodge #747 AF&AM, Scottish Rite, and the Sudan Temple.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a sister, Merian G. Hoggard; nephew, Van O’Neal and wife, Julie; niece, Kathy O’Neal and husband, David; great-nephews, Fletcher O’Neal, Eric Williams and Ronnie O’Neal III; great-niece, Rachel O’Neal; and seven great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday (April 14) at Ocracoke United Methodist Church with Pastor Richard Bryant officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.
