Ocracoke’s summer season begins, events week of May 30 to June 4

Tuesday, May 30
Special public meeting to discuss Hyde County’s proposed occupancy tax rate increase. Community Center, 5 p.m.
Jolly Roger: Aaron Caswell and Jackie Willis, 6 p.m.
Gaffer’s: Texas Hold ‘Em Poker, 7 p.m.
Coyote Music Den: Coyote Plus One, Brooke German and Nick Derrick, 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday, May 31
“How to Read a North Carolina Beach” a free program on the island ecosystem begins at 10 a.m. at North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching outdoor classroom behind the ferry office. Programs last about 90 minutes, are outdoors and are taught by Elizabeth Hanrahan, a certified wildlife educator.
Down Creek Gallery reception for island photographer Crystal Canterbury. Live music and refreshments. 5 to 8 p.m., with music and refreshments.
