William Holland Baker

William Holland Baker, 67, of Manteo, Dare County, died Oct. 5, in the Hock Family Pavilion, a Duke Hospice Facility in Durham.

He was the father of Dr. Erin Baker of Ocracoke and grandfather of Zoe E. Modlin of Ocracoke. He was the husband of Patricia C. Baker, at home.

Born in Huntington, West Virginia, on April 10, 1951, he was a son of the late Jeane Sanderfur Baker and Paul Richard Baker.

William served his country honorably in the U.S. Army. After his military service, he worked for Verizon Wireless for 30 years.

His love of surf fishing, carpentry and gardening led him to become an active member of the Roanoke Island Community Garden and Beach Buggy Association. He was also a member of Roanoke Island Presbyterian Church.

In addition to his wife and daughter, Erin, he is survived by another daughter, Michaela Anne Roach (Henry) of Winchester, Virginia; a son, Brent Holland Baker of Washington, D.C.;  two sisters, Bari Baker Sojack of Florida and Becky Baker Reymond of Kentucky.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, in Roanoke Island Presbyterian Church.
