Ocracoke Community Radio, WOVV 90.1 FM, will present the first of their annual summer fundraising concerts with recording artist Mike Proffitt with Dana Silvercloud at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, in the Berkley Barn.
Doors will open at 6:30 and Proffitt, an acoustic classic rock artist, will perform two sets with his longtime bassist Dana Silvercloud.
Admission is $25 per person and includes heavy hors d’oeuvres by Jason’s Restaurant. Cash bar by 1718 Brewing Ocracoke will be available.
The nonprofit community FM station is involved each year in some non-music fundraising events, such as the 5K/10K/half-marathon race and the women’s arm wrestling, the latter for 11 years.
“But everyone involved with the station has maintained that a regular music event is something WOVV is interested in promoting,” said Debbie Wells, general manager. “We are interested in bringing folks to the island that are new to island listeners–someone they haven’t seen before.”
And they wanted to do an acoustic presentation.
This particular act is a duo that WOVV Board Member Tommy Hutcherson saw perform in Virginia Beach one night and loved them.
“After he saw them a second time, he convinced WOVV that this was the right act for our first try at this,” she said.
She noted that this concert is an experiment.
“We aren’t interested in competing with businesses on the island who make their living promoting music,” she said. “This would be a once-a-year deal.”
