Ronald Thomas O’Neal, Jr., 72, of Ocracoke, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2024.

He was the husband of Kathleen Brophy O’Neal.

Born on September 21, 1951, in Morehead City, he was a son of the late Mildred Garrish O’Neal and Ronald T. O’Neal Sr.

Ronnie, as he was known, lived a life full of dedication and passion both on and off the waters that he loved so dearly.

After attending the College of the Albemarle, Ronnie pursued his passion for the ocean as a charter boat captain.

He was the proud owner of the “Miss Kathleen,” guiding countless fishing trips and sharing his love for the waters around Ocracoke.

Ronnie excelled as a basketball player through high school and college, demonstrating his dedication and athleticism on the court.

A devoted member of the Ocracoke United Methodist Church, Ronnie was deeply rooted in his community and cherished the relationships he built there.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Ben O’Neal.

Ronnie is survived by his cherished wife, Kathleen, and his beloved son, Ryan Thomas O’Neal, along with numerous friends and extended family who will miss him deeply.

In keeping with Ronnie’s wishes, there will be no service at this time.

Memorial donations may be made in his honor to the Ocracoke Working Watermen’s Association, reflecting his deep connection to the maritime community.

Ronnie’s legacy will endure in the hearts of those who knew him and in the waters he navigated with such expertise and care.

  1. Fished with buddies on the Miss Kathleen too many times to count in the 90’s and early 2000’s, and knew Ronnie around the island from being homeowners since 1985. He always put us on the fish, and was a great host on the Miss Kathleen. Always enjoyed catching up with him on land also. RIP Ronnie, and thoughts and prayers to Kathleen and the whole O’Neal family.
