Observer staff report

Motorists traveling to and from the north end of Ocracoke may need to add a few more minutes to their trips since the North Carolina Department of Transportation has reduced the speed limit in the sand bag area along NC 12 from 55 mph to 35 mph.

The reduced speed area starts just north of Ramp 63.

This recent move was for increased safety on the most vulnerable part of the highway, said Ferry Division spokesman Tim Hass in an email.

The speed limit is reduced further – to 25 mph – just past the entrance to Ramp 59 and which is about a mile from the ferry terminal, or South Dock, as it is called.

Hass said the 25 mph signs had been destroyed in past storms and the NCDOT simply replaced them.
