A camper van fire at the NPS Campground on Ocracoke on Monday (June 29) night was quickly brought under control with no injuries to visitors or responders, according to a Cape Hatteras National Seashore statement.

The fire occurred around 9:30 p.m., the statement said.

Ocracoke Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Ernie Doshier said three trucks and about 10 volunteers responded.

“When we got there, the vehicle was fully involved,” he said, and generating a lot of heat. “You could not get up there around it without proper gear on; it was that hot.”

Two water hoses and one with foam contained the fire shortly after the OVFD arrived, he said.

An earlier rain helped keep the area moist to prevent the fire from spreading, and the OVFD soaked the surrounding brush, Doshier said.

The fire was confined to a camper van on a parking pad, the Seashore said, and one nearby tent experienced minor heat damage.

In addition to the OVFD and National Park Service personnel, the Hyde County Sheriff’s Office, and Hyde County EMS also responded.

Seashore staff are assessing the campsite for any repairs needed.

Doshier said that vehicle fires typically aren’t investigated.
