The NC Department of Transportation today reopened Highway 12 on Ocracoke.

The first ferry left Hatteras  1 p.m., with a departure from Ocracoke at 1:30.

NCDOT cautions travelers to be aware that high tide tonight may cause problems at this location north of the pony pens that has been the site of frequent ocean over wash.

This is the same spot at which the state has been rebuilding the dunes on the ocean side for the last few weeks. Sunday’s storm washed away all of that work.

Ferry service will continue on schedule as long as the road remains open.
