
Walton Leroy “Little Walt” O’Neal Jr., 46, died Saturday (Sept. 1) in his Ocracoke residence.
Born July 1, 1972, in St. Petersburg, Florida, he was a son of Walton L. O’Neal, Sr. and Janice Sue Crawford O’Neal.
“Little Walt” graduated from Bainbridge High School in Bainbridge, Georgia, and worked for the N.C. Ferry Division.
He loved fishing and was known to be a very generous person with a big heart.
In addition to his parents, “Little Walt” is survived by a brother, Carl O’Neal and wife, Serina, of Ocracoke; two nieces, MacKenzie O’Neal of Ocracoke, and Paison May Birge of Seattle, Washington; two nephews, Chandler O’Neal of Ocracoke, and Jackie Dean Birge, Jr. of Seattle, Washington.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Jackie Dean Birge.
A Service of Remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, in the Ocracoke United Methodist Church, officiated by the Revs. Richard Bryant and Ivey Belch.

Lil Walt, you will be missed. I loved you and the way you treated my girls. Always made me laugh, taught me how to clam. You join now Elizabeth “Capt” O’Neal your niece. May God give you smooth sailing seas. Rest in His arms peacefully.
