The Ocracoke United Methodist church today will open its fellowship hall from noon to 5 p.m. for folks to gather on a winter afternoon.

“We’re calling it a ‘Warm Center,’” said UMC Pastor Susie Fitch-Slater about this new initiative.

There will be coffee and a pot of soup simmering.

“It’s just a place for people to come to warm your body and your soul or your spirit and hang out,” she continued.

Some of the older women will be on hand to teach people how to knit and crochet and men might come in to whittle, she said.

The “hang out” will continue throughout the winter with dates and times pending.
