Vincent Rockel, 91, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, died on Oct. 30, in Sarasota, Florida.
He was the husband of Jane Rockel.
Born Nov. 22, 1932, and raised in Washington Crossing, New Jersey, he was a son of the late Vincent and Anna Rockel.
Vince spent over 20 years in Spring Lake, New Jersey, before relocating to Sarasota in 1989. He also cherished his time as a part-time resident on Ocracoke Island, for more than five decades.
A distinguished athlete, Vince excelled in soccer, basketball, and baseball from high school onward, earning All-Regional and All-State honors.
His athletic talents led to a scholarship to The Pennington School, where he was later inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame.
Vince served his country with honor for over 35 years, reaching the esteemed rank of Sergeant Major.
After his military service, Vince earned a bachelor’s in biology and a master’s in education in Biological Science and Teaching from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
A lifelong Tar Heel fan, he remained deeply loyal to his alma mater.
Vince dedicated his career to education, teaching science, and coaching and officiating sports for over 25 years in Wall Township, Brick Township and Ocean Township. He was also a founding member of the Shore Soccer Officials Association.
Vince’s life was a testament to service, family, and community.
Along with his wife of 69 years, he is survived by one brother, four sons, one daughter, two grandsons, six granddaughters, one great-grandson, and four great-granddaughters.
