Ocracoke School’s Sports Awards ceremony Wednesday night had plenty of superlatives for its current students.

And at the end, an alumni was also honored when Kevin Perez, Class of 2016, was inducted into the school’s athletic Wall of Fame for his cross country and track and field achievements.

He holds the school’s 5K record with a time of 17:15 and also holds the school’s records for the 800 meter at 2:19, the 1600 meter at 4:48.7.

Running Club coach and art teacher Kitty Mitchell said Perez qualified for the state championships in four years of  cross country and in the initial years of the track and field program. He was regional cross country champion in 2013 and 2014 and placed eighth at the state championship in the 3200 meter with a 10:23.5 time.

Mitchell noted that Perez began his running career with the Ocracoke School Running Club and soon was winning age-group medals in competition, including the Nags Head Woods 5K and the Sea Turtle 5K Run.

In the 2016 Ocracoke 5K race, Perez was the overall winner edging out his uncle, Chito Guerrero,  in an epic battle.  In addition to his uncle, Kevin’s mother, Lulu Perez, and sister Karen, a senior, also are outstanding runners. To read more, click here  and here .

Honoring school athletes with outstanding achievements, the Wall of Fame is at the entrance to the gym.
