The Kitty Mitchell Studio is offering a three-day oil painting workshop Nov. 3 to 5 with Tim Simpson.

Simpson’s work is on view in Mitchell’s gallery at 271 Irvin Garrish Hwy., where the workshop will be held.
Titled “Water and Light: Ocracoke in Oil Painting,” Simpson’s three-day class will explore oil painting as a personal creative journey.
“Everyone will work from the same subject, but each finished painting will be unique,” he says. “Like sculpture, oil painting is built in layers, moving from basic shapes to refined details.
“Over three days, you’ll learn about essential oil painting tools, how to begin a painting, how to work from dark to light to develop value, and how subtle shifts in value create depth and feeling.
“As each layer builds on the last, you’ll also learn to recognize when a painting feels complete in your own style.”
Mitchell met Simpson of Williamston, South Carolina, years ago when he sold his work in Kathleen O’Neal’s Island Artworks studio gallery.
“We were all sad when she closed, but I was happy for him to show his amazing work in the Kitty Mitchell Studio gallery,” Mitchell said. “He really loves painting Ocracoke scenes. Sometimes there’s an Ocracat hidden in the painting.” (See “Ready for Dinner).
